What is kanji?
Kanji are characters borrowed from Chinese — each carries a meaning, not just a sound. There are 2,136 “everyday-use” Jōyō kanji. We start with Grade 1 (80 kanji) — the most basic — and unlock more as you go.
音 On & 訓 Kun readings
Most kanji have two kinds of reading. The on’yomi (音, shown in カタカナ) came from Chinese; the kun’yomi (訓, shown in ひらがな) is the native Japanese word. Example: 山 = mountain, on サン, kun やま.
How to use this
Learn shows a tranche of 10 at a time — first in order, then reversed, then shuffled — and grades you. Pass a quick quiz to unlock the next tranche. Write lets you trace. Progress shows your grid and custom decks.
